Reflexology...
Based on an ancient Chinese therapy, reflexology involves manipulation of specific reflex areas in the foot, hands and ears that correspond to other parts of the body. Sometimes referred to as zone therapy, this bodywork involves application of pressure to these reflex zones to stimulate body organs and relieve areas of congestion. Similar to acupressure principles, reflexology works with the body's energy flow to stimulate self-healing and maintain balance in physical function. Developed in the United States in the early 1900s, this technique is used today to reduce pain, increase relaxation and stimulate circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids. How does Reflexology Work?There are many theories. One is to look at the nervous system as the explanation of reflexology's working.
Pressure applied to the feet generates a signal through the peripheral nervous system. From there it enters the central nervous system where it is processed in various parts of the brain. It is then relayed to the internal organs to allocate the necessary adjustments in fuel and oxygen, Finally a response is fashioned that is sent onto the motor system.
This message is feed forward to adjust the body's tone or overall tension level. If applied properly the tone will reset itself to a lower operating tempo. A lower operating tempo means a lessening of stress and less wear and tear on the body's systems. Simply put, reflexology works by: 1) by relieving stress and tension through relaxation;
2) by improving blood circulation and promoting the unblocking of nerve impulses;
3) by helping to reconnect and restore balance between mind, body and emotions.
What can Reflexology do For You?
Reflexology reduces stress in the body, an important benefit because stress has been found to cause or complicate a large percentage of all health problems.
Since Reflexology treats the whole person, not just the symptoms of disease, most people benefit from treatment. Reflexology is suitable for:
- Acute and chronic conditions
- Muscular and skeletal pain in jaw, shoulders, neck, back, and hips.
- Sleep disorders
- Sports injuries
- Preventative therapy
An increasing number of people are using this safe, natural therapy as a way of relaxing, balancing and harmonizing the body.
Reflexology is an effective technique to promote health, but it is not intended to replace the care of your physician or podiatrist.
